 Historic Evandale Tourism
Tasmania has a national and international reputation as a touring holiday destination given the state's magnificent wilderness, spectacular natural landscape, rich cultural heritage and superb wine and food. The Northern Midlands Council is committed to working with local tourism operators, regional bodies and Tourism Tasmania to ensure the Northern Midlands receives its fair share of the tourism dollar.
To facilitate tourism developments and promotion of the local industry, the Northern Midlands Council collaborated with the Southern Midlands Council in the late 1990's to form the Heritage Highway Tourism Region Association Inc. This Association works to develop and promote the Heritage Highway Touring Route, one of the eleven designated state touring routes.
The challenge for the Northern Midlands is to encourage the many visitors travelling the Midlands Highway to stop and savour the beauty and attractions of the area, rather than treating the highway merely as a means of getting between Hobart and Launceston. This challenge is being met - with the latest Tourism Tasmania Visitor Survey data showing the average number of nights spent in the Heritage Highway Region has risen from 1.8 in 2005/2006 to 2.6 in 2006/2007. Visitor number wise, the number of visitors spending at least one night in the Heritage Highway Region went from 36,400 in 2005/2006 to 57,500 in 2006/2007 - an increase of 57.8%.. In 2001, manufacturing and retail trade businesses employed 10.4% and 11.4% respectively of the Northern Midlands workforce. The major manufacturers are Tasman Group Services which operates the meatworks at Longford, and Nubrik.
Agriculture The Northern Midlands produces a significant percentage of the state's meat sheep and cattle, wool and crops including peas, poppy, cereal, potatoes and onions. Manufacturing & Retail
