About UsThe Northern Midlands business Association was formed in 1999 and welcomes as its members business operators and people interested in economic development in the Northern Midlands.

The association is managed by a Board of nine Directors and seconds the Northern Midlands Council's Manager (of) Economic and Community Development for the equivalent of one day / week to serve as the Associations Executive Officer.

Our Purpose
Promoting economic development in the Northern Midlands through the fostering, promotion and development of local businesses.


Our Objectives:


To Identify economic development opportunities in the Northern Midlands and environs.
To initiate and coordinate local community input on the directions and priorities for local economic development.
To strengthen and diversify the economic base of the Northern Midlands and environs.
To undertake any activities that may assist in the economic development of the Northern Midlands and environs.

Our Key Roles
As the peak body of businesses in the Northern Midlands, NMBA will achieve its purposes through:

  • Support - working with businesses to enhance their sustainability.
  • Collaboration - forming partnerships to enhance local businesses, including education and training, planning and innovation.
  • Accessing Research - on business best practice and providing this to members in a user friendly format.
  • Representation and Advocacy - with state and local Governments, other Northern Economic/Business Development bodies on key issues, developments and decisions impacting on Northern Midlands businesses.

Our Strategies
Focus in Recent Years:


  • Facilitating networking and collaboration between local businesses.
  • Exploring and utilising the advise and support available from key bodies including the department of State Development and Business North.
  • Collaborating with The Northern Midlands Council, local business and communities to develop and investors guide for the Northern Midlands.
  • Promoting local businesses through the update of the directory, regular media releases and effective use of internet facilities.
  • Developing our capacity to identify and respond to emerging issues relevant to local businesses.
  • Facilitating the development of new business ventures in the Northern Midlands, including the promotion of the TRANSlink Centre at Launceston Airport.
  • Keeping members informed of our progress through bi-monthly single sheet newsletters.
  • Exceeding the expectations of our major sponsor: Northern Midlands Council,  and thus securing their ongoing support.
  • Organising a minimum of 5 forums/workshops per annum on topics responsive to local business needs.

Our Key Results Areas


  1. NMBA to have a positive statewide profile and to be seen as a valued partner in fostering the economic development of the Northern Midlands.
  2. NMBA to be working with businesses and other key stakeholders to identify business development opportunities in the Northern Midlands and serving as a catalyst for these developments.
  3. NMBA members to be satisfied by the quality of service, representation, support and advocacy provided.
  4. Membership of NMBA to have significantly increased each year.


The Northern Midlands is a prime location for further business developments. Factors that assist with attracting new businesses include the geographic location of the area in the heart of the State, the proximity to Launceston and its workforce, the airport and adjacent TRANSlink Centre, a pro-active Council and quality lifestyle. The Heritage Highway Touring Route encompasses the Northern Midlands and the area is increasingly active in the tourism industry.
